The true monthly cost of owning a vehicle

A car payment is only one part of what you will spend. Understanding all six recurring costs gives you a complete picture of what vehicle ownership actually costs each month.

Loan / lease payment

Typically the largest monthly vehicle cost. Use the Car Affordability Calculator to estimate yours.

Insurance

Mandatory in every province. Ranges from ~$700/year (Quebec) to ~$2,200+/year (Ontario) depending on your profile.

Fuel

Varies by driving distance, vehicle efficiency, and local gas prices. Use the Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate yours.

Maintenance

Budget $100–$200/month for oil changes, tires, brakes, and unexpected repairs. Newer vehicles typically cost less.

Parking

Varies widely. Downtown Toronto parking can cost $200–$400+/month. Suburban and rural areas are typically much lower.

Licensing & registration

Annual licence plate sticker and registration fees vary by province. Ontario: ~$120/year. Alberta: ~$84/year.

Rule of thumb: Total vehicle ownership costs (all six items) typically represent 15–25% of gross monthly income for the average Canadian driver. If your vehicle costs exceed 25% of your gross income, consider whether a less expensive vehicle or reduced driving would improve your financial position.
