How auto insurance works in Canada

Auto insurance is mandatory in every Canadian province and territory. The minimum required coverage and how it is delivered varies significantly by province.

Private insurance provinces (Ontario, Alberta, Atlantic provinces, territories): Coverage is purchased from private insurers regulated by provincial authorities. Rates vary between insurers, so shopping around is essential.

Public insurance provinces (BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan): Basic coverage is provided by a government insurer (ICBC, MPI, SGI) at regulated rates. Optional coverage can be purchased from the public insurer or private insurers.

Quebec hybrid system: The SAAQ covers bodily injury through a public plan funded by registration fees. Property damage coverage is purchased from private insurers.

The factors that most significantly affect your premium are: your province, your driving record (claims and convictions), your age and experience, the vehicle you drive, and how you use it. Shopping around and maintaining a clean record are the two most effective ways to keep costs down.
