Ontario G2 Road Test Guide

What the examiner tests, common mistakes that cause failures, how to book, what to bring, and tips to pass your G2 road test on the first attempt.

Eligibility: when can you take the G2 test?

You can take the G2 road test after holding your G1 licence for at least:

  • ·12 months — standard G1 hold time
  • ·8 months — if you completed an approved driver education course

Your G1 licence must still be valid (not expired) when you take the G2 test. G1 licences are valid for 5 years.

What the G2 test covers

The G2 road test is a practical driving evaluation conducted by a DriveTest examiner. The examiner sits in the passenger seat and directs you through a route. The test typically takes 20–30 minutes and covers:

Starting and stopping

Smooth starts, complete stops at stop signs and red lights, proper use of brakes.

Turns and intersections

Left and right turns, yielding at intersections, proper lane positioning.

Lane changes

Mirror checks, shoulder checks (head turns), signalling, smooth lane changes.

Parallel parking

Parallel parking between two markers. You will be asked to do this at least once.

Three-point turn

Turning the vehicle around in a limited space using three moves.

Roadway observation

Scanning ahead, checking mirrors regularly, awareness of pedestrians and cyclists.

Speed management

Driving at appropriate speeds, not too fast or too slow for conditions.

Following distance

Maintaining safe following distance from the vehicle ahead.

The G2 test does not include highway driving. That is tested in the full G road test.

Common mistakes and automatic failures

The examiner scores you on a point system. Too many minor errors result in a fail. Certain errors are automatic failures regardless of your overall score.

Automatic failures

  • ·Running a red light or stop sign
  • ·Hitting a curb, cone, or another vehicle
  • ·Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
  • ·Driving the wrong way on a one-way street
  • ·Requiring the examiner to intervene for safety
  • ·Failing to stop for a school bus with flashing lights

Most common minor errors (accumulate to a fail)

  • ·Not doing a full head/shoulder check before lane changes and turns
  • ·Rolling stops (not coming to a complete stop at stop signs)
  • ·Not checking mirrors frequently enough
  • ·Driving too slowly (well below the speed limit)
  • ·Poor lane positioning on turns
  • ·Not signalling early enough
  • ·Jerky braking or acceleration
  • ·Not scanning far enough ahead

The most important tip

Make your head checks obvious and exaggerated. The examiner needs to see that you are checking your blind spots. A subtle glance is often missed. Turn your head clearly and deliberately before every lane change and turn.

How to book your G2 road test

G2 road tests are booked through DriveTest (drivetest.ca) or by calling 1-888-570-6110. You can book online, by phone, or in person at a DriveTest centre.

  • ·Book as early as possible — popular test centres can have wait times of several weeks or months.
  • ·You can book at any DriveTest centre in Ontario, not just the one nearest to you.
  • ·If you need to cancel or reschedule, do so at least 48 hours in advance to avoid losing your fee.
  • ·The first G2 road test is included in the $158.25 G1 fee. If you fail and need to retake, the fee is $53.75 per attempt.

What to bring on test day

Your G1 licence

The original — not a photocopy.

A roadworthy vehicle

Properly insured, registered, and in good working condition. The examiner will check lights, horn, and wipers.

Proof of insurance

The vehicle's insurance documents must be in the vehicle.

A licensed accompanying driver

You need a fully licensed driver to drive you to the test centre (since you cannot drive alone with a G1). They wait at the centre during the test.

G2 licence restrictions

With a G2 licence, you can drive without an accompanying driver on all roads including highways. However, some restrictions still apply:

Zero blood alcohol

You must have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of zero. This applies to all drivers under 21 and all G1 and G2 holders.

Zero cannabis impairment

You must have zero presence of cannabis in your system.

Passenger restrictions (first 6 months)

Between midnight and 5 a.m., you can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under (unless accompanied by a fully licensed driver).

Passenger restrictions (after 6 months)

Between midnight and 5 a.m., you can carry up to 3 passengers aged 19 or under.

Seatbelts

All passengers must wear seatbelts. Passengers cannot exceed the number of working seatbelts.

After G2: the full G road test

After holding your G2 for at least 12 months, you can take the full G road test. The G test includes highway driving and is more comprehensive than the G2 test.

The G road test evaluates: highway entry and exit, lane changes at highway speeds, merging, and all the skills from the G2 test. The test typically takes 30–40 minutes.

Once you have your full G licence, you have no driving restrictions. Your G licence must be renewed every 5 years.

Don't let your G2 expire

Your G2 licence is valid for 5 years from the date you received your G1. If you do not pass your G road test within that time, you will need to start the graduated licensing process again from G1. Book your G test well before your licence expires.
